Good by to the old concept of work-life balance！
Let me just share and say that I am not a big fun of “work-life balance”.
Let’s face it.. Who would have a perfect 50% work and 50 % personal life? Um… I would say no one… that is the reason why I never liked the idea of having a “balance” because it pressures me to have this perfect balance of 50/50 or a equal distribution.
In recent years, the term Work-life Integration became so popular here in the U.S. I’ve see some blogs about how work-life balance is dead and Work-life Integration became the new norm.
What does this mean to us?
If integration is not your word, you can put it as work-life harmony or work life flexibility.
Basically, the idea is that work and life are no longer a complete separate thing. Yes, it is important to have boundaries and I am not promoting to work while you are with a family.
We need to forget about the time you put in for work and family, in stead, what we all want to is a purposeful and fulfilling life.
If you are going to a job just to get a paycheck, do you want to do this for next 5 years or can you do a job is meaningful for you and you get to bring benefit (money, benefit and joy) to your family?
Ok, I get it… Emi, so how can I get my balanced work-life?
Tip #1: Think about your purpose: Why do you do the job that you have now? If you hate the job so bad that ruins your life? Time to leave. You are too valuable and you are too good to stuck in the job that you are in. Because work and life are so intertwined, you want to work for an organization that has the same values you do.
You like the company but you hate the job? Do more tasks that will give you energy.
Tip #2: Take some time off: Don’t feel bad about your work, when you earn your vacation time off, then use it. If your boss gives you a hard time telling you that you are leaving the job behind. That is not your problem. A great boss should know how to prepare for your vacation time so that the team can cover.
Tip #3: Set a boundary- if you cannot leave work on time because of the amount of work you have which requires you to work over time?
Re-evaluate your current work. Are there certain things that you do that is not necessary? Is there other department that operates so well that they dont do overtime? Can you learn from them? Be the solution! Don’t get stuck in the hamster’s wheel.
I really want you to do the job you love. The job that gives you a sense of purpose.
While you are working, don’t just waste your hour. Work on your personal and professional development. Meet people who inspires you a lot. Have lunch or go for a walk with someone who can be your peer mentor or a role model.
If you do so, your work becomes part of your life and you will be able to live a meaningful work-life.
