How did you learn your English, Emi?
How did you learn your English, Emi? is one of the most asked questions from my podcast listeners and the other social media followers.
I was fortunate enough to learn English when I was 10 through an English Conversation school. I loved learning English but I differently did not how beneficial to be able to communicate in English back then! It was just really fun for me.
I also had friends who speak English and I also had pen pals. I know this helped me to use English. I also have to share the fact that I was dating with a boyfriend who spoke English as well.
Although I was living in Japan, I created the environment where I can practice my English.
How about now in US?
At my work, there is no one who can speak Japanese except me and I did not get hired because I speak Japanese. With that said, I have to work extra hard to make sure that I am building my trust and credibility at work.
When I am not sure if I pronounced the word right or I never heard of the expression that other people are using, this is the simple action that I take.
I ask them.
I am not embarrassed about asking questions! I learn from asking.
When I have to present in front of people, I practice A LOT! When I have to send an email to someone who is really important or a big group, I make sure I have someone to proofread. I also ask for feedback.
Most importantly, I don’t let my English be an excuse that I cannot.
As you can see, I am very proactive and I also don’t just learn English but I improve my communication skills and set the right mindset to be a better person!
What can you do?
Being able to communicate in English is not just about learning English. Yes, it is important for you to learn English, study grammar and spellings etc but there are more to it. If you are an English learner, I challenge you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or scared. You will learn so much by taking a leap!
