Today’s Featured Global Woman: Ms. Sumie Yamakawa

Sumie was born and raised in a small town in Aichi, Japan. Sumie came to Canada when she was 17 years old as an exchange student and she fell in love with this country!  After she graduated from a college, she has started working in a wine industry. She worked at a small winery at her first career and after 2 years of working with this winery, she got an opportunity to work with a mid-sized family owned winery where her real career experience begun. She was in charge of all the Asian tourist groups(i.e. Getting contract to bring groups to the winery, creating unique program, booking groups etc) After few years, she realized that there is a limitation to her career  if she worked for a family owned business and the only skill she had was that she speaks Japanese. That’s when she decided to take sommelier program. During the sommelier course, she met her future colleague who helped her to move on to the biggest and most internationally known winery in Canada. She was still taking sommelier course when this great opportunity came and she decided to take it. After she working for 6 years with various positions, she  finally got  promoted to an Estate Manager at the winery.

Today’s Take away:

  • Great Japanese Cultural Value to keep:

Reading between line and being aware of others

  • Things Japanese women need to  drop & adjust to be successful:

Voice your opinion and speak up! It is not easy to do so make sure to practice it!

  • Things to know to be a successful Global Women:

Have an open mind and know that it is ok to have your own opinion and being different.

Advice from Sumie:

Have your challenge spirit. Even if you fail, it can be a great learning experience. It is up to you to make the decision!

Take this action to be the Next Global Woman:

Don’t hesitate to take that one step and move forward! Set a goal and take a baby step.

3:Be aware of how you are using your strengths at your current job and how other people are recognizing your strengths. Writing it down is so important because later on this list can help you to build your resume and your cover letter!
4: Write this down and read it out loud!
“You have a gifted talent that no one can copy, and you are here to let your talent shine!”
5:My last advise that many people really don’t do….
You really have to take some action! Don’t just think but please do something about it…

Q & A
Question from Yuri san: Work life balance and the role of male and female
Answer: It is up to both men and women’s effort.
Partnership is a key!! We need to see each other as a partner at home.
Set a expectation that both a wife and a husband can agree on.
Ladies, it is OK to ask for help around the house.
Let go of your perfection
Give your partner a space and give him a chance to learn so that he can help you. If you are keep doing EVERYTHING, of course, your partner won’t step in and help you. It is better to be done than you are still try doing everything to make it all perfect.

Today’s Featured Global Woman: Ms. Manami Nakayama

Manami Nakayama currently serves as the Executive Director for the San Diego Japanese Community Center where she is responsible for overseeing the administration of all the programs and services and the creation and management of projects which promote community engagement and collaborative efforts between other Japanese organizations.

She was born in Japan and came to the US when she was 10 months old and grew up in San Jose as a first generation Japanese-American. Fluent in Japanese and English, Manami has more than 15 years of community service experience in the Japanese communities of both San Jose and San Diego. Professionally, she is currently utilizing her expertise in administration, translation, and marketing. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology with an emphasis of human development from the University of California, San Diego.

She currently serves on the San Diego-Yokohama Sister City Society Board of Directors as the Community Engagement Director, and serving as a committee member for the Community Engagement Committee of the Mingei Museum, Madoka Entertainment, and San Diego Nikkei Network. She also volunteers in various local community events where she is a planning committee member of the Asian Cultural Festival, San Diego Night Market, and the San Diego Ramen Festival.

Today’s Take away:

  • What does having a global perspective mean to Manami?

Understanding the different cultural value is really important to build a great relationship and be able to think from different perspective. You can understand different people.

  • Biggest difference between Japanese and American culture.

Being reserved is a great value and it is ok to think others before thinking of yourself; however, you cannot do this all the time. If you keep doing this, you will miss out opportunities.

Reserve vs. Assertive.

It is important to speak up and if you slightly feel something , just go and ask!

  • One important quality to have to be a global leader?

Patience. Having the good listening skill will allow you to observe and step back and take it in rather than reacting to different ideas.

  • One important global communication skill to have?

You don’t have to know all kinds of different languages. Having the open ears. All what we need is willingness to communicate.

Advice from Manami:

  • Never stop losing  yourself and never stop learning! Take every opportunities to meet people! Once you stop, you will lose the opportunity.

Today’s Featured Global Woman: Ms. Noriko Fujimaru Kalember

Noriko Kalember is a founder of True North Life Coaching.  When Noriko was 19 years old, she decided to visit Australia for 2 weeks and it has been 14 years since then. She has lived in Perth and Brisbane. She has been happily married to her husband for 7 years and she has a beautiful daughter. Not only Noriko is a mother, she is also a successful career woman. (high hive to working mom friend!)  She has been working as a Human Resources information System business consultant and she’s reached to her six figure income!   Noriko also wanted to start her own business and she is in her coaching business for 2 years now.

Noriko Kalember:  True North Life Coaching

Today’s Take away:

  • Great Japanese Cultural Value to keep:
    • We are conservative and reserved which is a great value to have.
  • Things Japanese women need to  drop & adjust to be successful:

Be a little aggressive and open. If you are naïve and waiting for an opportunity to pop up, there is nothing for you here. You have to go and create an opportunity yourself.  Being shy is not a compliment here- it literally means YOU KNOW NOTHING.

  • Things to know to be a successful Global Women
    • In Japan, predominantly we learn American English. But there are so many types of English in the world, for example British English, Australian English, Singlish, Kiwi English, South African English and so on. It is very important that learning American English is not enough.

Advice from Nori:

Take this action to be the Next Global Woman:

Today’s Featured Global Woman: Ms. Akari Kawamura

Akari Kawamura is a poet who writes amazing and beautiful poems. She is originally from Aichi, Japan. She had lived in US for 5 years, Australia and New Zealand for a home stay program. Akari also went to a language program at San Diego State University in California for one year. After coming back to Japan, she has been writing poems for self-help and self- development. In summer of 2016, she’s gotten an opportunity to publish her first English poem on Amazon. She had faced so many challenges with this publishing process because she was working with people in US and “of course” to using English. She is in the final process of releasing her poem to the world!

Today’s Take Away

  • Great Japanese Cultural Value to keep:
  • Things Japanese women need to drop & adjust to be successful:
  • Things to know to be a successful Global Women:

Advice From Akari
